Prof. Sherien Elagroudy

Biography:

Dr. Sherien is a Professor of Environmental Engineering at Ain Shams University, Egypt and the founding Director of Egypt Solid Waste Management Center of Excellence (ESWMCE) at the University. Ph.D. studies at Ryerson University and post-doctoral research at Yale.

The impact of Sherien work has been recognized in awarding her the Next Einstein Forum Fellow, L’Oreal UNESCO Fellowship for Women in Science, a fellow of the Global Young Academy and young scientist at the World Economic Forum in China.

Through ESWMCE, Dr. Sherien has managed several solid waste projects including detailed design of landfills, waste treatment facilities and transfer stations. She is also involved in projects in the field of Extended producer responsibility, landfill closure, carbon emissions, organic waste management, and setting landfill closure waste guidelines.

Abstract:
This talk examines how solid waste can be transformed into a valuable resource that supports the Arab region’s green transition. By exploring the integration of waste-to-energy technologies with broader renewable energy strategies, the presentation will highlight ways to reduce landfill dependency, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and improve environmental health. Case studies from the region and beyond will illustrate practical approaches to converting solid waste into clean energy, showcasing their potential to protect biodiversity, enhance resource efficiency, and create socio-economic opportunities. The session aims to demonstrate how solid waste management can serve as a cornerstone of sustainable development and a pathway toward a cleaner, greener Arab region.
