The Misunderstanding in a Play Reading at the BA

Alexandria— The Reference Services Unit is holding its monthly play reading in Arabic on Wednesday, 28 January 2009. Participants will read The Misunderstanding (original title in French Le Malentendu) by Albert Camus.
The Play is based on a true story: a mother and her daughter own an inn in a small gloomy town. Aiming to leave for a sunny place where there is sea, thus new horizon, they decide to kill guests of the inn and steal their money. One day, the prodigal son returns unrecognized after years abroad. Wanting to take his mother and sister by surprise, he does not reveal his identity instantly and thus runs directly towards his fate, for he becomes their next victim. This murder symbolizes an innate “misunderstanding” in human nature, a core principle in existentialism, in a world occupied by evil. Camus wrote this play in 1943 in occupied Paris, and the carnage of World War II is the immediate point of reference.
