The BA Celebrates the International White Cane Day

Posted on

Alexandria— The BA Taha Hussein Library for the Blind and Visually Impaired is organizing a celebration entitled “The International White Cane Day” on Monday, 13 October 2008 at the BA Plaza.

This event intends to grant the blind individuals in Egypt the right to celebrate this day by raising public awareness towards their rights and the challenges facing them. Fulfilling this awareness is through: encouraging the blind to use the white cane, bringing their attention to its benefits, directing the civil community and the concerned entities to fulfill their duties towards the pedestrian safety of the blind individual and finally raising the awareness of the motorists towards the mobility of the blind in the streets.

The white cane is a powerful symbol of independence for citizens who are blind. It’s also an effective mobility tool that enables the blind individual to fully participate and interact in the society.

The celebration features a number of events including an opening speech by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, a march from the BA plaza till Biram Eltounsy Theater (Elchatby) through the Corniche avenue and then back to the BA. The celebration also includes competitions, activities, and folkloric shows.

The celebration starts at 11:00 hrs and ends at 14:00 hrs.
