Alexandria Conference on Women: Steps Towards Achieving Reform (STAR)

Alexandria — In 1899, Qassim Amin published a book titled “The Liberation of Woman” this not only marked women’s right movement in Egypt but also marked the beginning of the Egyptian liberation.
In many cases women’s liberation within a society should be accompanied by liberation of that society its self, without which there is no chance.
In a country like Egypt it is to be noted that women still occupy a small area of leadership, as seen in many cases such as the fact that only 2 Egyptian ministers are women.
During the Alexandria Conference on Women: Steps Towards Achieving Reform (STAR) which was held at the BA during the period from 11 to 13 December 2006, it was observed that 61% of illiterates in Egypt are women, 75% of which are from rural areas.
The conference was a gathering of many Governmental and non-governmental representatives, researchers, and feminists from the Arab world whom concluded that in order to empower, liberate and stand for women’s right the society would have to begin with the young, creating an environment where the young felt no repression due to their sexes, an environment of mutual respect and rights laying the path for a future where are equal.
