The Bibliotheca Alexandrina Antiquities Museum, affiliated with the Cultural Outreach Sector, in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Colombia in Cairo, presents a screening of the documentary film Chiribiquete, a Journey into the Ancestral Memory of America, on Monday, 1 December 2025, at 5:00 pm, in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Main Entrance, Auditorium Hall.
This documentary is the first to display archaeological research carried out in the Serranía de Chiribiquete National Park, a remote area of the Amazon rainforest in Colombia. The documentary lasts 55 minutes and will be screened in English with Arabic subtitles. The film invites Egyptian audiences to discover a surprising and little-known place, considered one of South America's most important natural and cultural treasures.
The documentary shows why Chiribiquete is unique: it is home to thousands of cave paintings made by ancient people, some more than 12,000 years old. These images depict people, animals, and scenes from everyday life. Through aerial photographs, 3D models, and interviews with scientists and indigenous communities, the film explains what these paintings might mean and why they are so important for understanding the early history of the American continent.
Chiribiquete is also a national park of great environmental value. It was declared a Mixed World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2018 for its natural and cultural wealth. It is a vast territory covered by jungles, Rocky Mountains, and rivers. It is home to iconic species such as the jaguar and the giant otter, and its ecosystem helps regulate the climate and protect a wide variety of plants and animals. It is also home and refuge to indigenous peoples living in voluntary isolation, whose culture and safety must be protected.
The presentation of this documentary at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina has special significance. This space, dedicated to knowledge and dialogue between cultures, offers a unique opportunity to bring the Egyptian public closer to the history and natural wealth of Colombia. The screening seeks to strengthen cultural ties between the two countries and highlight the importance of caring for sacred sites and natural landscapes that still hold secrets about our past.
