The Caucasian Chalk Circle in a Play Reading at the BA

Alexandria— The Reference Services Unit is holding its monthly play reading in English on Wednesday, 14 January 2009. Participants will read The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht.
The play is set after the Second World War when two groups of peasants claim a valley that was abandoned during the war. One group of peasants provided a singer who sang a song called The Chalk Circle as a parable. It narrates a coup d'état in a Caucasian city where the Governor and his wife are overthrown and, accidently, their baby is forgotten during the flee, to be taken care of later by the maid, Grusha. It is also the story of the judge Azdak, who always gives everybody what they actually deserve, and in one instance uses the chalk circle as a tool. Following the “play within a play” technique, the events of the song seem to reflect those of the setting giving a parallel that cannot be missed.
The session starts at 16:00 hrs. at the BA Arts and Multimedia Library. Participants should register their names at the General Information Desk at the Library entrance.
