Rhythm and Verses Exhibition

Rhythm and Verses is a visiting exhibition. It started its journey from Singapore in 2004, then Malaysia in 2005 and finally reached the third stage Egypt. Rhythm and Verses ventures into the manner due to its magnificient tablets which shows the beauty and delicacy of the scripts. The Exhibition was
3-24 June 2007 in cooperation with Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM).

The Exhibition sheds light on a distinguished collection of Persian single folios produced from the 16th to the 19th century CE. These folios are considered to be the best achievement of the Islamic civilization. However, they have not attracted the attention of scholars and publishers.

Accompanying the Exhibition is a catalog of 108 single folios
showing the aesthetic elements of these folios in which these calligraphic works were recited, bringing the vibrations of the sacred sounds to the surface of the page. The English version of the catalog was composed by Dr. Heba Barakat, Calligraphy Center, Bibliotheca Alexandrina and translated it as well into Arabic. Members of the editing board are Dr. Khaled Azab, Dr. Isaac Ebeid, Sherine Ramadan and Shimaa Alsaieh.

These folios were written in Arabic and Persian, and in different forms and styles of scripts. They include Sayyid Mir 'Imad al-Hasani Al Husseini (d.1615) in his fine Nasta'liq style; Dervish Abdul Majid Taliqani in his shikasteh style; and from the Atelier of Shah Tahmasp, examples of Shah Mahmud Nishapuri (d.1564). The beauty and delicacy of the scripts are highlighted in numerous folios with stamped seals and signatures, making this collection one of historical importance, shedding more light onto the development of Persian calligraphy.

Throughout the exhibition and publication of Rhythm and Verses, the artful strokes of the calligrapher's pen reveals the perpetual aesthetic beauty and devout wisdom of the single folios. Visually, the script styles start to reveal the rhythm of the poem, the enchanted melody of the prose, and the measured tone of the verses. Rhythm and Verses attempts to contribute towards constructing a clearer history of the development of this art form and the role of its calligraphers.
