The Deterioration and Creativity of Arabic Calligraph

The idea of holding the exhibition of the "Arabic Calligraphy between Deterioration and Creation" coped with the title of the conference "Towards better Arabic calligraphy" which aimed at finding successful solutions for the bad handwriting of students in particular, and that of people in general.

Since the main problem was bad handwriting, we tried hard to gather samples of the handwriting of students from all educational stages and from universities, especially bad handwriting which represents a great percentage of students. We also collected samples of bad handwriting from some institutions.

No doubt that bad handwriting has a negative effect when dealing with these institutions, and so is the case with the handwriting of students which is reflected in their educational achievement and has a negative effect on evaluating their marks in the three stages of education, and on their grades in the different faculties.

The visits to the seven educational directorates in Alexandria and meeting their directors and senior inspectors had the greatest impact in obtaining all the necessary assistance for our work so as to make the exhibition and the conference successful.

Here we display the writings as they are, with no modification, to show how bad our students' writings and some employees writings are! Naturally this results in negative effect and creates problems.

The exhibition displayed the types of handwriting in graded order, the bad ones, then the average ones and finally the good ones. After that it displayed the handwritings of some students in calligraphy schools. It showed samples of the handwriting of students at Mohamed Ibrahim Academy for Arabic Calligraphy in Alexandria. Then the exhibition showed some paintings of Egyptian calligraphers who were awarded in the 6th international competition for the art of Arabic calligraphy in Turkey 2003 – 2004 in the honor of the artist "Emad Hosny". Finally, it showed the creative paintings in the art of Arabic calligraphy of its three pioneers: artist Sayed Ibrahim, artist Mohamed Ibrahim and artist Kamel Ibrahim. This way the spectators could see samples of the wonderful work of great artists which enriched exhibitions and museums with the beautiful art of Arabic calligraphy
