The Conference aimed at studying the Ancient Egyptian calligraphy of the world. Within this framework, it covered the study of calligraphy according to a certain axis.
On the occasion of the launching of the actual activities of the Calligraphy Center at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and in collaboration with the Calligraphy Institute in Paris, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina organized an International Forum entitled “Calligraphy, Inscriptions and Writings in the World throughout the Ages” in April 2003 under the auspices of H.E. Mrs. Suzanne Mubark, Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
This forum gathered specialists in all fields of calligraphy studies from all over the world to help create dialogues amongst specialist and to come out with new discoveries and researches in calligraphy. It will be held every two years. The first Forum was held from 24-26 April 2003 and the second Forum took place from 24-26 April 2005.
A conference on “Towards Better Arabic calligraphy” was held for three days from 20-22 July 2004. This conference was organized by the Arabic Calligraphy Unit of the Calligraphy Center in cooperation with the General Egyptian Society for Arabic Calligraphy, the Education Directorate of Alexandria and some Faculties of Alexandria University under the auspices of Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
The granite wall mural surrounding the Bibliotheca Alexandrina reflects the inscriptions and writings of the ancient world, hence reflecting the role of the Library in collecting the human knowledge through the ages in its attempt to become a center of human civilizations.
