The first-ever Global Meeting of Associations bringing together representatives from national, regional and international associations of higher education institutions and rectors’ conferences will focus on what associations can do to ensure that expanding cross-border higher education has a positive impact. Plenary sessions and parallel working groups will examine facts and trends at the global level, debate international policy responses as well as opportunities and challenges ahead. Participants will be invited to work towards a collective action plan. A growing list of regional and national associations have agreed to attend, and we look forward to welcoming the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Association des Universités francophones, the Association of African Universities, the Union de Universidades de América Latina, as well as the European University Association. On the national level, associations from Australia, Canada, Italy, South Africa and the USA are among those who have already agreed to attend. This Meeting is for association representatives only.

Focusing on higher education institutions as key actors in cross-border education, the International Conference will build on the results of the Meeting. This Conference will address the place of cross-border higher education in internationalisation strategies, how these are changing and why. University leaders will be invited to develop action plans to be adopted at the institutional level and formulate their expectations from associations. The Conference welcomes representatives of universities and higher education institutions, other higher education stakeholders, as well as representatives of UNESCO, OECD and the EU. Most heads of national, regional and international associations of universities will remain for both events.

The events are organised by the International Association of Universities and are co-hosted by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport and will take place at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Egypt.
